Pilates Exercises

New to Pilates? Learn the main tenets of this popular and effective form of exercise.

Pilates, also known as Contrology, was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates in Germany. It is an exercise focused on the core, and is comprised of methods using the mind to control muscles. Its aim is to teach awareness of breath and alignment for better posture and balance.

There are seven main aspects to Pilates: Breathing, Centering, Concentration, Control, Precision, Flow of movement and Flexibility.

Breathing

Proper breathing techniques are taught in order to properly circulate the flow of blood.

Centering

The “powerhouse,” made up of the abdomen, lower back, hips, and butt, otherwise known as the core, is the main focus of Pilates.

Concentration

Extreme concentration and focus is required in order to properly control breathing and follow through with the delicate movements.

Control

Moving in a controlled manner is essential for doing Pilates.

Precision

Every movement needs to be precise; each one has a purpose. Leaving out any detail will hinder the ultimate goal.

Flow of movement

Flow needs to be continuous, transitioning smoothly from one move to another.

Flexibility

The practice of Pilates improves ones flexibility.
