For decades people have been asking, "should kids lift weights"? Fortunately for us, modern science along with scores of health, fitness and human development organizations have come to a rather firm conclusion. The answer you will find from those who specialize in the area of strength training and human development is, "yes", children should engage in physical activities that involve strength training. However, when making a statement such as this, there are a number of things to keep in mind.
The Truth of the Matter
1. Proper weight lifting will not stunt a child's growth.
2. Professionally supervised youth resistance training is safe.
3. Resistance training benefits kid's muscles, ligaments, tendons and bones.
4. Weight training may begin as early as 7 or 8 years of age.
5. Recommendations say children should weight train 2-3 times per week.
6. Research shows weight training is no riskier than any other sport/activity.
7. Experts say kids should strength train, not bulk or body build.
8. Children should only lift weights with proper qualified supervision.
Teaching children to strength train is a rewarding experience. If you have children and want to get them started into a safe strength training program, contact your local health club or personal training company and interview the trainer(s) you are considering hiring to work with your child.
There is a wealth of information regarding this topic available online. The following are outstanding organizations that are authorities in strength training for children.
American Council on Exercise (ACE)
International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA)
National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA)
When it comes to strength training and children it is always best to play it safe. Clearance from your family physician is essential to beginning a strength training program. Follow the proper guidelines and your child will experience all the great benefits resistance training can provide and avoid any set backs that may come from improper training methods.
