Which Exercise Programs Are Best for Weight Loss?

To lose weight, find a program that focuses on balanced eating, strength training and aerobic exercise.

Any exercise program will result in weight loss as long as you give as much attention to what you are eating and how much you are eating as you stay active. Some exercise programs however are designed to target specific areas of the body or to accomplish a specific goal such as increasing strength or endurance (the ability to exercise for longer periods of time). Here are some of the best exercise programs for weight loss.

Comfort Matters

Any program that you are able to do comfortably will be the most effective. Not everyone can do aerobics, weight-lifting or other high-intensity workouts, so the best exercise to lose weight is one that you can perform without hurting yourself or aggravating an already existing physical condition.

Burn Calories

Calorie-burning exercises include walking, swimming, aerobics, bicycling or dance exercises; in short, anything that gets you moving, gets your heart rate up and speeds up your respirations. Remember however that you must burn more calories than you take in for them to be effective.

Find Balance

A workout program should include both proper nutrition and exercise. If you see an exercise program that recommends completely eliminating any food group such as carbohydrates or taking in an extremely small amount of calories a day (1000 to 1200 is about as low as you should go), then you will want to consider another type of exercise program.

Strength Training

Please keep in mind these are only best if you are physically able to lift without pain. This also does not mean you have to become the next Mr. or Ms. Universe; rather, weight-training programs help turn fat into muscle. Again, as long as you are able to do them and you are doing them properly, weight-training programs can be excellent weight-loss exercise programs.

Before starting any exercise program including one intended for weight-loss, have your health care professional weigh you and tell you how much weight he feels you need to lose.

Agree that drastically reducing calories for even a short period of time does NOT work in the long run. That said, exercise is only part of the answer when it comes to weight loss...calories in vs. calories out!
