Histidine

Aid Overall Health

L-Histidine is a semi-essential proteinogenic amino acid that can be produced in the body but must be boosted through your intake of certain foods or dietary supplements. You can find many supplements that contain L-Histidine.

A proteinogenic amino acid is an amino acid that is directly responsible for protein building. It is encoded in the universal genetic code, which is the genetic coding that ensures the proper production of protein.

Although all amino acids are called the building blocks of protein, the truth is that only proteinogenic amino acids are actually found in protein. In fact, some amino acids can reduce the life of protein, if they combine with the protein in the body, although they may aid in the production of said protein.

L-Histidine and the Body

If you say the word histidine and immediately thought of histamine, then you made the right connection. L-Histidine is the precursor to histamine. Histamine production is an immune response in your body. If your body produces too much histamine, you may suffer from serious allergies.

Histamine also helps the digestive system to produce the necessary acids to break down foods and eliminate foreign bodies.

In addition to creating histamine, L-Histidine aids in the production of both with and red blood cells. In addition, it is part of the process for healing damaged tissue in the body, helps to grow new tissue and even aids in the reduction of metal toxicities in the blood.

L-Histidine production can also be dangerous to the body. Too much can aid in the production of too much histamine, which can lead to asthma attacks. In addition, L-Histidine can lead to histamine poisoning, which many people confuse with allergy attacks. Although this is rare, it can be deadly.

L-Histidine Uses

The interesting thing about L-Histidine is that even though it is known that it is a necessary amino acid for a healthy body, there are no know real health benefits for using L-Histidine supplements.

There are no studies to support the use of L-Histidine supplements to increase L-Histidine in the body. However, in studies, doses of up to 4 grams a day produced no side effects. Larger doses and long term studies have not been conducted.

Despite the lack of evidence for the benefits of using L-Histidine, supplement companies still product it and claim that it does provide certain benefits. Remember, these supplements are not regulated by the FDA. The supplement manufacturers are responsible for ensuring a quality product.

Some of the benefits marketed for L-Histidine include:

  • Sexual enhancer for women
  • Prevent ulcers
  • Prevent rheumatoid arthritis
  • Prevent anemia
  • Increase carnosine in muscle tissue

L-Histidine Warnings

There are few warnings regarding L-Histidine. However, if you have liver disease or kidney disease, L-Histidine can aggravate your condition and you should not take supplements. In addition, it can cause asthma and allergies to occur.

Truthfully, there is just too little information regarding L-Histidine supplements to know whether or not they are good, bad, neither, or a little of both. That is why if you are on medication or have a medical condition, you should consult with your doctor to determine whether or not you should use L-Histidine supplements.

If you are pregnant or nursing you should err on the side of caution and avoid taking L-Histidine supplements until more is known about how L-Histidine can affect your baby.

L-Histidine in the Marketplace

There aren’t many L-Histidine products for sale from supplement companies. This is not to say that they aren’t any, just that there are far fewer L-Histidine products than other types of supplements.

It’s most likely that part of the reason for this because of its relationship with histamine. Most people don’t want to take a product that can produce more histamine because they associate histamine with allergies and the need to take an antihistamine.

However, there are a few products to be found online, but they aren’t the cheapest vitamin supplements that you will find. The average price of L-Histidine products is $20, although you will find some for as low as $7 and some as much as $80.

L-Histidine Bottom Line

While it is obvious that L-Histidine is important to the body, there doesn’t appear to be any real reason for you to take supplements. If you suffer from allergies, then it is possible that L-Histidine can aggravate them further and then there is always the possibility of developing asthma.

What’s more, there is no data available to determine how L-Histidine may affect your body, especially after long term use. This is one of those things that you may want to reconsider, unless medically instructed to do otherwise.
