The Different Types of Panax Ginseng Root

Panax ginseng comes in four basic forms depending on its use. Fresh ginseng is the root in its raw form which is then ground and used to make a tea, or added to food or dietary supplements.

White ginseng is a variation of the panax root which is allowed to grow for as long as six years before harvest. The extended growing time reduces the plant's water content and makes the root much easier to dry.

Red ginseng root is also allowed to grow for up to six years as well, but it is not peeled and dried upon harvest. Rather, it is cured through a steaming process so as not to lose any of the nutrients or active ingredients contained in it.

Finally, sun ginseng uses younger roots which are processed using extremely high heat. The high heat ostensibly increases the amounts of active ingredients in the root, including nitric oxide.

Research suggests that sun ginseng is the best form because of its antioxidant properties. However, red ginseng root is considered by Eastern medicine to be the most effective.

Health Benefits of Panax Ginseng Root

Each of the four classifications of ginseng have their own unique properties. Therefore, you should be careful not to confuse Panax ginseng supplements with Panax Pseudoginseng, American ginseng, or Siberian ginseng. Panax ginseng is strictly the root taken from the Asian perennial plants.

This supplement is often marketed to promote its alleged benefits in improving mental skills, critical thinking, and memory. In recent years plenty of supplement makers have touted panax ginseng root as one of the best products for improved memory function.

Panax ginseng is also believed by some to be helpful in treating erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation in men. For the purposes of erectile dysfunction treatment, panax ginseng root is most often included in a male-only dietary supplement designed specifically for enhanced sexual performance.

For the treatment of premature ejaculation, panax ginseng is usually the main ingredient in a cream that is applied to the genitals. You can also find it included in supplements aimed at general good health for men.

Eastern medicine not only uses panax ginseng root for virility, but also for general good health. Panax ginseng is classified as an adaptogen, which means it acts to normalize many body functions including the endocrine system and blood pressure.

The Safety of Panax Ginseng Root

According to a report from the University of Wisconsin, panax ginseng root has been classified as food safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This classification means it can be used as an ingredient in any number of foods or dietary supplements without safety concerns.

However, if panax ginseng root is taken as a supplement in dosages larger than what is generally considered food safe, it’s possible there could be some unwanted side effects.

With that in mind, WebMD notes that it is possibly safe as a supplement for adults when taken for periods of no more than three months. WebMD further claims that panax ginseng root is possibly unsafe when taken for an extended amount of time, suggesting that use beyond three months could cause hormonal changes in both men and women.

For pregnant women, panax ginseng root may pose a special risk to their infants while in the womb. The combination of hormonal changes plus some of the chemicals found in the root have been linked to certain birth defects.

Although studies are still ongoing to prove the relationship between birth defects and panax ginseng root, pregnant mothers should avoid taking it until those studies have been completed. It should be noted that Eastern medicine also discourages the use of panax ginseng root by pregnant women.
