What's my Body Mass Index?

Body mass index (BMI) is used to classify a person into one of the following body weight categories: underweight, normal weight, overweight or obese. The index is calculating using only two factors: height and weight. Learn more ▸

Height Weight

BMI as a tool does have its limitations. For example, BMI does not distinguish between fat and muscle, so a very muscular person who is in good shape could fall in the "overweight" range despite having very little body fat. Furthermore, BMI is not very effective for people who have lost significant muscle mass, such as the elderly or those with serious illness.

Finally, a higher than normal body mass index in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as those who are under five feet tall, is not necessarily an indication of being overweight.
