Step Up Your Aerobic Routine

Update your 1989 step aerobics routine with these new step cardio variations!

 

Step aerobics aren’t just a fad of the eighties and nineties. But you can probably stand to update the routines you learned on your VHS tapes!

Step cardio is a great option if you don’t own an elliptical trainer or a treadmill. Some of these exercises work in the strength training that is otherwise lacking in traditional step training.

You can use many different raised objects to serve as your step. But we recommend a gym step designed to handle the beating you’re sure to give it during this routine.

We also suggest wearing a pair of tennis shoes during this routine. This provides extra stability and prevents toe-stubbing!


Aerobic Step and Arabesque

Step 1

Aerobic Step and  Arabesque - Step 1

Stand facing the step with your feet together. Place one foot on the step and shift your weight forward, raising your other leg behind you as you do.

Step 2

Keep your back leg firm and straight, flexing your glutes and lower back muscles.

 

Step 3

Lower your leg to the floor as you shift your weight back to center. Tap your stepping foot to the floor and repeat.

Face the step with your feet shoulder width apart and knees slightly bent.

Step 2

March onto the step, one foot at a time and step back down in the same order.

Step 3

While you step, pump your arms as if you were running.

 

Aerobic Step Jacks

Begin by straddling the step. Raise your arms over your head, bend your knees and lower yourself into a squat.

Step 2

Aerobic Step Jacks - Step 1

In one powerful motion, launch yourself onto the step, bringing your feet together and arms down to your sides.

Step 3

Aerobic Step Jacks - Step 1

Hop back down off of the step into your starting position and repeat.

 

Split Squat Jumps on Step

Split Squat Jumps on  Step - Step 1

Straddle an elevated step. Jump onto the step with both feet and bring your hands up to chest level.

Step 2

Split Squat Jumps on  Step - Step 1

Swing your arms back down as you jump off the step and return to the starting position.

Step 3

Split Squat Jumps on  Step - Step 1

Repeat for the desired number of reps.
