The maca supplement is actually derived from a type of root. It is in the same classification as a common radish or turnip, and looks very similar in both shape and texture. An adult within their normal weight range can take up to 2000mg of maca without suffering from any serious side effects. However, it is important to note that this high of a dosage is not recommended for long periods of time. Generally the dose is slowly dropped down to about 500 mg per day if it is intended for long term usage.

The only way that you can properly determine the proper maca dosage for your weight and height is to go to your doctor and discuss your intentions with them. Make sure you let them know what kinds of medicine you are on – regardless of if it is prescription only.

Maca Benefits

The maca herbal supplement is most commonly noted for its ability to enhance sexual relations between couples. For instance, one of the primary benefits that people seek out the root for is to increase their fertility. Maca has been shown to be effective in raising both the fertility of the woman and the sperm count of the man.

Maca is also well known for its ability to significantly increase the libido of either sex. Coincidentally, sexual performance almost always soon follows the enhanced libido in both males and females. It is widely speculated that it is relatively harmless as no serious side-effects have been reported and it continues to grow in popularity. However, this does not mean that your body will be able to tolerate maca – it is up to you and your health practitioner to determine that.

It is also important to note that a supplement regimen of maca should be periodically broken up with small breaks. Typically, this is recommended at least once a month, although breaks at a higher frequency than this will not render the supplement useless. The breaks are only recommended if you intend to use maca every single day. However, some people choose to break up the doses even if they are only using maca for its short term benefits.

You should always consult with a qualified health care professional before you add any type of non-prescription medication to your regimen – even if it is widely regarded as harmless. Your body may react in an adverse way to both the maca root itself, or something else that is included in the supplement.
