Rice Bran Definition

The bran of any kind of grain – wheat, rye, corn, etc. – is the outer layer of the grain. This is usually removed and ground to be used for a variety of purposes.

Many people eat white rice, which is basically the part of the rice left over when the bran is removed. The rice bran is what gives rice its brown color.

Rice Bran Stabilization

Rice bran has an oil made up of lipase enzymes in it that causes it to become rancid hours after harvesting. In order to stop this process, manufactures have to stabilize the rice bran by changing the makeup of the oil.

According to Stephen Duren of Kentucky Equine Research, the rice bran is heated and pressed to the point where the lipase can no longer spoil the grain. After this process is complete, the nutrients in the rice bran can last for years instead of hours.

Stabilizing the rice bran doesn’t affect its nutritional value. It only extends its shelf life.
