Nutracoastal STEAM Troubles

In all likelihood, Nutracoastal is out of business because of product troubles. In 2009, Nutracoastal participated in a voluntary recall of their product, STEAM.

STEAM was Nutracoastal’s male enhancement product. The claim for this product was that one capsule would give you all night energy and all night stamina.

The ingredients listed for this product included:

The problem was, in addition to this list of ingredients, STEAM also included Tadalafil. Tadalafil is a prescription medication that has been approved by the FDA to treat erectile dysfunction.

Of course, the addition of this ingredient would ensure that STEAM worked the way that it was supposed to.  It is illegal for any supplement company to include a medical grade product in their products because they aren’t approved by the FDA for this use.

Nutracoastal would have had to go through the phase studies that a pharmaceutical company goes through in order to legally use Tadalafil.  It would have taken many years to prove that this combination of ingredients is safe to sue in conjunction with Tadalafil.

The other issue concerning Nutracoastal’s use of this ingredient is that you aren’t supposed to take erectile dysfunction products if you are taking any heart medications. This type of medication can interfere with nitrates, nitroglycerin and can also lower blood pressure.

According to the FDA, people who have diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and high cholesterol and take medication for those conditions could have been seriously adversely affected by taking STEAM.

In fact, for someone with high blood pressure that was taking medication, the addition of STEAM could actually lead to their death.

According to Nutracoastal, they were unaware of the presence of Tadalafil in their product. The voluntary removal of STEAM from the shelves wasn’t the result of an FDA investigation, but a random lab analysis of the product for a purity check by Nutracoastal itself.

Once they discovered the presence of Tadalafil, Nutracoastal informed the FDA and then began removing the product off of the shelves. In addition, they released a statement on their website, to all of their distributors and to their customers that purchased the product directly from their website.

The FDA released a statement warning about the product as well. The deadline to return this product expires in June end of 2011.

If you have taken this product and you have had an adverse reaction to in, which is documented by a physician, you could contact the FDA. There are several lawyers advertising a class action suit against Nutracoastal for those adversely affected by using STEAM.

The lot number for the recall of this product was Lot 90260. All other tested lots were cleared of containing Tadalafil.

Nutracoastal S-DROL Troubles

After the issues that Nutracoastal had with STEAM, they didn’t need to have any issues with any other products. However, in July, 2009, about 6 months after the recall of STEAM, Nutracoastal announced a voluntary recall of S-DROL.

  • S-DROL was designed to help weightlifters build muscle mass and strength. While we couldn’t find any sites that listed the ingredients in this product, the recall occurred when a lab test for purity and quality, conducted by Nutracoastal, revealed that S-DROL contained desoxymethyltestosterone.
  • Desoxymethyltestosterone is an anabolic steroid and an unapproved drug. This illegal substance can cause acute liver damage, brain damage (after long term use) and left ventricular hypertrophy.
  • What’s interesting about the recall of this particular product is that if you go to some weightlifting forums, many weightlifters are wondering how they can get their hands on more of this stuff.
  • Steroids has long been a hot button topic amongst athletes and many weightlifters believe that they should be allowed to choose for themselves whether or not they want to take a risk with a steroid product.

The expiration date for a full refund for this product after the recall is January 1, 2012. However, there is no deadline for reporting any adverse reactions to this product to the FDA. Anyone with an adverse reaction is asked to contact the FDA.

While there hasn’t been any reported lawsuits regarding the use of this product, if you have had proven adverse reactions to this product, you can contact a lawyer regarding a civil suit.

The lot number for S-DROL containing desoxymethyltestosterone was Lot 810481. No other S-DROL lots were found containing desoxymethyltestosterone.

Nutracoastal and the Cause of Impurities

While the presence of a known drug may not be considered an impurity by some of you, any ingredient that is found in a supplement that isn’t listed on the bottle is considered an impurity.

In this case, the cause of the impurities was the fact that Nutracoastal’s products were manufactured in China and not in the US. While it is true that from time to time a product made in the US is recalled due to impurities, it is rare that an illegal substance will find its way into US made products.

  • However, impurities in imported supplements have been a problem since the practice of importing supplements started. There have been dozens of companies that have had to recall products for the same reasons as Nutracoastal.
  • In fact, just last year one company had to remove all of their products off of the shelves because they each contained some illegal substance, mainly steroids. The financial impact of something like this is almost impossible to recover from.
  • Many companies, however, have faced this type of recall because of testing by the FDA. When this occurs, not only does the company have to recall their products, but they also have to pay a fine to the FDA and repay the affiliates or other companies that have already purchased their products to sell.
  • Once a recall occurs, whether it is voluntary or not, the company is open to civil suits. In many cases, law firms will try to find multiple clients to represent in a class action suit to increase the amount of money potentially to be won.

Even though the recalls for these two products were only for a single Lot number each, the damage to the Nutracoastal’s reputation has been detrimental. Nutracoastal is viewed as one that doesn’t have control over the quality or purity of their products, despite the fact that this was the first recall for the company.
