When it comes to deadlifting, the neutral spine v.s rounded back is often not discussed. A big part of training, that is often forgotten, is to master their own specific technique that accounts for their own skeletal muscle anthropometry, geometry limb length and biomechanics. . 📍In the classic deadlift (left), hips are relatively neutral, but depends on individuals biomechanics whether or not they are more vertical or horizontal. However, your set-up HAS to be adjusted based on your own body proportions. This is the part most trainers and coaches fail to recognize. Arm, torso, and legs lengths all differ. Additionally, remember when you change back angle, hip and knee angle have to change as well. . 📍In the rounded back (right), people can typically lift more weight but will generate less hip extension torque vs. a more relative neutral spine. Less hip extension torque means more torque within the lumbar spine, regardless of how much stiffness (bracing) you have. When people round, they do it more at the t-spine vs. the lumbar spine. However, this technique should be reserved for very advanced and elite lifters who already have massively strong backs. . 📍Take-home message: Relative neutral spine is more recommended and overall safer. There are many technical and anatomical differences to take into consideration as well as hand placement, stance width, hip anatomy, optimal hip extension, mobility, and shoes, which are all factors. Context and your body matter big time on this one! .

𝐇𝐢𝐩 𝐅𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐜𝐡 Tight hip flexors are super common! Humans spend a lot of time sitting which can contribute to this issue. This is a great stretch to open things up and give some relief. It’s also one we see destroyed constantly. Allowing your back to arch and your pelvis to fall into an anterior tilt will decrease the amount to stretch on the hip flexor. Lots of people do this as they try to get “into” the stretch as deep as possible. Their ego gets in the way and they want to show how GOOD they are at doing this stretch. But they are missing the mark here. Focus on squeezing the glute of the back leg and trying to tuck the pelvis into posterior tilt as much as possible. This will keep the stretch in the hip flexor. You will notice a significant difference in the stretch and it’s likely that your range of motion in the stretch will decrease dramatically. Let go of the idea that you need to have an impressive looking pose to achieve a benefit for your body. Focus on the area of intent and on feeling it maximally rather than on trying to look good. The hip flexors are often weak, in addition to being tight. Only focusing on stretching is unlikely to result in long-term changes. Get to work on strengthening them also!
