Silicon dioxide already exists in the human body in small amounts. The body’s stores of silicon dioxide occur in small amounts all throughout the ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and vascular lining. Silicon dioxide is also present in the liver, spleen, pancreas, and adrenal glands.

The amount of silicon present in the body is around seven grams in younger people. This number decreases with age. The decline of silicon dioxide in the body may cause brittleness in teeth, nails, and hair, the gradual wearing down of bones and ligaments (occasionally leading to arthritis), and a general decline in the health of the cardiovascular system.

Silicon dioxide helps to maintain healthy, strong bones, heal bone fractures, avoid bone deformities, and ward off the onset of osteoporosis. These benefits are mostly attributed to its ability to allow the body to absorb more fully nutrients like calcium and vitamins. Because of this, it is often helpful to add silicon dioxide to a regimen that already includes a calcium supplement.

The silicon atom in the compound allows the nervous system to function properly, keeping nerve cells in working order. Since the element silicon does not exist naturally by itself, the easiest way to consume enough of it is through silicon dioxide.

Studies indicate that silicon dioxide resists the buildup of plaque inside the arteries, preventing atherosclerosis; it also helps to synthesize Vitamin B1 within the body.

Naturally present in the body’s connective tissue, silicon dioxide gives these tissues strength and elasticity and slows their degeneration. Because of this ability to maintain connective tissues, including collagen, many scientists determine that silicon dioxide is a critical component in anti-aging treatment.

One long term study indicated that people who drank water with greater amounts of silicon dioxide seemed to resist the onset of dementia. Silicon dioxide resists the accumulation of aluminum in the brain, helping to ward off Alzheimer’s disease.

Silicon Dioxide Food Sources

Silicon dioxide does appear naturally in our diets, in higher concentrations in plant-based foods than in animal-based foods. Oranges, apples, plums, grapes, and cherries are considered high in silicon dioxide content, along with green vegetables, especially cucumber and celery.

Nuts- notably almonds and peanuts- and whole grain foods also contain a significant amount of silicon dioxide. Typically, you can glean sufficient amounts of silicon dioxide from a healthy, balanced diet. Because most western diets do not include enough fruits and vegetables, a supplement is often needed.

Silicon Dioxide Dosage

There is no consensus among physicians on the recommended daily dosage of silicon dioxide. Some researchers believe that the minimum daily intake of silicon dioxide, to allow the body’s most basic functions to occur correctly, is 40 milligrams.

Others recommend a formula of 0.3 to 0.8 milligrams of silicon per kilogram that you weigh. Still other health experts suggest an even higher optimum dosage.

Silicon dioxide can be taken on its own, usually in a pill, but can also be consumed through herbs and extracts where it occurs in high concentrations. Horsetail and nettle root extract are two excellent natural sources of silicon dioxide.

Silicon Dioxide Side Effects

In most cases, no adverse side effects emerge when silicon dioxide is taken correctly. Silicon dioxide does not produce fumes, has zero toxicity, and is safe for general use.

Scientists do not agree on one upper level for silicon dioxide intake. The USDA does not indicate an upper limit for silicon dioxide intake. The Foods Standards Agency in the UK suggests that up to 700 milligrams taken daily over the course of a lifetime is safe.

Used in food products to prevent caking, silicon dioxide should not exceed over 2% of the weight of the food. Additionally, for optimum safety, silicon dioxide should be created through vapor phase hydrolysis.
