The alkaline diet emphasizes foods high in alkalinity, such as fresh fruit, vegetables, roots and tubers, nuts and legumes. While this diet may not be recommended for individuals with chronic diseases, it may benefit those who lack energy or have a proclivity to benign cyst development or headaches. The diet downplays more acidic foods, such as pork, beef, milk and eggs. Some experts recommend that individuals test their alkaline levels with pH testing kits to get an idea of their current pH levels. The alkaline diet is not necessarily designed for weight loss, but for health and illness prevention purposes.
