petersen step-up is a calisthenics exercise that primarily targets the quads and to a lesser degree also targets the glutes and hamstrings.

The only petersen step-up equipment that you really need is the following: box and step platform. There are however many different petersen step-up variations that you can try out that may require different types of petersen step-up equipment or may even require no equipment at all.

Tips

  1. Do not allow your knee to pass your toes as you squat down/
  2. Keep your weight on your heel and not your toes as you squat down.
  3. Hold your arms out in front to help balance yourself.
  4. Keep the foot flat on the small box, and focus on only allowing the heel to touch the floor on the squat.

Variations

  1. Increase or decrease the height of the platform. Increase the height as you progressively get stronger and decrease the height if you are having trouble completing the exercise.
  2. Perform with a weight vest.
  3. Perform with a dumbbell in the goblet position or hold a medicine ball out in front of you.
