What is the PTDC?

PTDC stands for Personal Trainer Development Center. It was launched in 2011 by Jonathan Goodman and serves as a resource center for personal trainers and other fitness professionals. The PTDC has two other related components, the Online Trainers Academy and Online Trainer Coaching.

The website states that the PTDC “helps you do a better job, build a better business, and live a better life, at every stage of your career.”

The PTDC has free articles for personal trainers with topics like online training, career improvement, working with clients, selling, and coaching. You can also sign up for a free weekly newsletter. There is also a bookstore on the PTDC website where you can purchase resources on online training, building your client base, social media, and building a personal training career.

Online Trainers Academy (OTA)

The Online Trainers Academy is a certification program for personal trainers and fitness professionals.

There are four modules to complete before accessing the certification exam. You must make a 70% or above on the exam to earn the OTA-1 certification. The four modules are:

  • Module 1 – Mindset
  • Module 2 – Business Structure
  • Module 3 – Client Care
  • Module 4 – Marketing
  • Bonus Module – Level Up Your Skills

The cost of the OTA is $799 or $87 a month for 12 months (totaling $1,044). This cost includes the modules, certification exam, an online textbook called The Fundamentals of Online Training, a study plan, video lessons, business templates, access to a private fitness business owner Facebook group, and social media templates.

The first exam attempt is included in the $799 fee. If you do not pass the exam, you will need to pay $50 to re-take the exam.

There is also an Online Trainer’s Academy Level 2 certification but it is highly selective and the pricing is not listed online. You must apply online, complete two interviews, and then receive study materials before you can take the certification exam.

Online Trainer Coaching (OTC)

Online Trainer Coaching is a program for fitness professionals focused on online coaching, programming, and trainer mentorship. The cost is $699 for three months and it requires prior registration. This program is run in a cohort format and if you sign up via the PTDC website, you can save $200.

The OTC helps trainers improve their own health and wellness with a workout plan to either improve muscle or lose fat. You must have intermediate or advanced experience with exercise and fitness. The minimum time commitment is three months.

This program includes an OTA Level 2 coach to help personal trainers meet their own fitness goals. It assists with accountability by providing trainers with personalized workouts based on their responses to the questionnaire.

PTDC Reviews

Most of the online reviews of PTDC focus on the Online Trainers Academy, which is the certification program. Online PTDC reviews note both strengths and weaknesses with the Online Trainers Academy.

Online Trainers Academy Reviews

Online OTA reviews note some strengths and weaknesses of the program and certification. The main downside of the OTA certification is that it is not accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).

The top personal training certifications are accredited and include ACSM, ACE, NASM, ISSA, or NSCA. There are many certification options available, so you need to find out which personal trainer certification is best for your goals, knowledge, experience, and education.

Another downside of the OTA is that the program is overwhelming. There is a textbook, video lessons, four modules, four mini-modules, templates, a study guide, and many articles available on the PTDC website. That’s a lot of material to read through, especially if you are new to personal training.

Next, the OTA is an expensive program coming in at a minimum of $799 if you pay for the course and certification in full. It is even more expensive if you want to divide the cost into twelve monthly payments.

Another downside is that this program is set to run at your own pace. This is great if you are self-motivated, but can be a major downside if you need a set schedule for reading, studying, and taking the exam.

Finally, the Online Trainers Academy focuses solely on online training. If you want to work with clients face-to-face, you may not get the education you need. While there are many similarities between online and face-to-face personal training, there are also differences.

Online Trainer Coaches Reviews

This not much information online about the Online Trainer Coaches (OTC) program. The only online reviews and success stories are on the PTDC website. The main downside is the cost of this program.

The Skinny on the PTDC

There is no doubt that the resources provided by the PTDC are helpful. The positive is that the OTA certification and OTC program can add knowledge and skills for any personal trainers interested in beginning or amping up their online training. However, these options do come with high costs and may not be the best option for every personal trainer.
