Are You Over Exercising?

If exercise is beginning to affect your life negatively, you may be exercising too much.

How do you know if you are over exercising? Ask yourself the questions listed below. If you answer yes to any question then you may need to reduce the frequency of your workouts.

Are you beginning to suffer increased incidences of injuries?

The Galveston Bay Injury Board reports that if you start to have frequent muscle strains or sprains or if you have exercised to the point of breaking bones, you may be over exercising. Your body needs to recover after exercise, particularly after intense or extended workout sessions. It is recommended that a rest day is implemented into a one-week workout period.

Has your exercise routine become an obsession?

Instead of working out because you know it’s good for you, you do it because you feel you have to. The Galveston Bay Injury Board advises that you watch for mental signs such as feeling guilty or having a lower self-esteem if you miss a day of exercise. If you see you are getting into this mindset, you may need to seek counseling to determine if you have an underlying mental health condition.

Does your exercise interfere with your sleep patterns?

Newbridge Health says that insomnia often occurs from over exercising. If you notice a change in your sleep patterns, this might be the cause. Reduce your fitness exercise program for a few days and see if your sleep improves.

Has your menstrual cycle changed?

If you are a woman who is still menstruating and your menstrual cycle stops, this is an obvious sign of over exercising. Consult with your gynecologist to ensure there is no other physical reason. Also, ask for suggestions on how to change your workout routine in order to restore your menstrual cycle.

Do you miss social events because of your exercise routine?

If you prefer to exercise over seeing or talking to your family or friends, you may be exercising too much.
