Types of Exercise Machines

Know the pros and cons of different exercise machines to choose one that best meets your needs.

If you have chosen to start a home exercise program with a piece of exercise equipment, get to know the main advantages and disadvantages of each machine If you workout at a gym, knowing about the machines will help you decide which one is best suited to your needs.  

Here are some of the common machines and a few things to know about each one. 

Elliptical Machines

These are a great choice for those with joint problems as they are low impact. Elliptical machines have a high calorie burn rate because you use your entire body. If you are just starting out, implement the arm movements gradually. 

Rowing Machines

These exercise machines give you a full body workout. This may not be the best machine for those with back problems.

Treadmills

These are a good choice for beginners or advanced exercisers because the machine can be adapted to any level. Jogging and running are fairly high impact activities, so start slowly.

Stationary Bike

This exercise machine is the lowest impact and may be best for beginners. The key to using this machine correctly is making sure that the equipment is adapted to your body properly by adjusting the height of the seat and the position of the bars.

Before you buy a machine or choose one to use at a gym, try a few different ones. Learn how to adjust the levels and the positions correctly as each machine will be a little different.
